S+S gave me the opportunity to network not only with my company partner but with other students around the nation. I loved having a geekdom membership as I was able to network and learn from the startups. S+S gave me the opportunity to grow professionally, personally, and brought me out of my comfort zone.S+S gave me the opportunity to interact with startups at all stages. I was able to gain lifelong friends and meaningful connections with mentors. Hands down best summer ever!

In our second year in business, Students + Startups took us to the next level of growth. We are huge fans! Where else can you access an incredibly talented pool of pre-vetted applicants, have a chance to connect more deeply with other entrepreneurs and startup companies in San Antonio, AND have subsidized compensation? It was a gamechanger. And we’ve loved our interns so much they have stayed on and worked the following semesters. Can’t wait for S+S 2020!

I learned so much more than I thought I would coming into the internship. I got to fully immerse myself in the marketing team at my internship. They mentored me and showed me exactly what I had been wanting to gain experience on. The S+S program itself offered so many resources as well. This made this experience for the summer even better

The Students + Startups program was an incredible experience! Not only did my intern add so much value and amaze me with her contributions, she became a resource I plan to continue using outside of the program. The community aspects of the program, such as the events and workshops, were hugely beneficial for me as a small business owner in meeting new, local connections that have already added value to my business.

The most valuable experience I had was interacting with investors of these startups and watching their investments and commitment to the companies grow. My internship at S+S opened up an entirely different perspective to the startup community.

SA Heron

My internship at the Heron was an incredible experience. I expected to learn some new skills, but was nervous as to how the summer would go. At every step of the internship, Ben gave me challenging, exciting assignments and projects that helped me learn and refine my own skills. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, Ben was quick to encourage me and validate that reporting is hard work, but his reassurance and help every time I hit a barrier gave me the confidence I needed. I am so glad that I had this experience of working with a team that loves what they do, and is dedicated to their mission. I learned so much over the course of this summer!

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for partner organizations with strong leadership, a positive and inclusive culture, and dynamic roles with a clear trajectory for growth. Other things we look for:

  • Must be located/headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
  • Diverse industries including tech, retail, food/beverage, robotics, SaaS, biomedicine, sustainability, non-profit and more.

What makes a good experience?

  • Instead of coming up with a job description, present a project. Determine what your prospective intern should be interested in and what they should excel at.
  • Develop a thoughtful on-boarding process, including an orientation session where you set goals and expectations. Include a 3-5 minute overview of different parts of the company, with a representative from each department.
  • Provide a healthy culture and immerse them into the camaraderie of what it takes to work productively and comfortably in an office or at a worksite.
  • Have biweekly 1×1 meetings with your intern to discuss progress on projects they’ve  been working on, areas of the business that are interesting to them, personal aspirations for growth, and recapping previous goals.

FAQ

We will be assuming internships are in-person while monitoring the COVID-19 situation.
You’re not committed to the program until you find the perfect candidate, and our team will work extremely hard to find you a great student! Apply!

Ideally, juniors to master students. We accept applications from freshman students, but companies have preferred students to be more along in their studies (around their second and third year).

Yes, if your budget allows, and if you have a project and/or job description for each individual intern.
It does depend on the company and its hiring needs, but we want to ensure that every student has a high-impact experience.
We ask companies to stick to the rate. If you feel compelled, we recommend gift cards, paying for parking, or professional development classes!
It’s an annual event that we host, bringing all of our students and companies together for “speed interviews.” You interview with ~8 students, 10-minute interviews each. There’s networking before, there’s networking after, and we encourage students to utilize this time to walk up to you if they wanted more time or didn’t get the chance to interview with you. It’s a mandatory event for our students and companies. Our out-of-SA students will do their interviews via phone call.

As we’ve grown, companies are bringing out everything they’ve got to set themselves a part from other company partners. This means pull-up banners, tablecloths, candy, t-shirts, swag, business cards, etc. Use your imagination, and bring your A-game. You are selling your company to them just as much as they are selling themselves to you all.
