Interns with Impact. Drive. Motivation. Superpowers.
Take the headache out of finding talent.
Students + Startups saves your company time and money by managing the early vetting process, ensuring all admitted candidates, from every field of study, possess the skills necessary to be internship-ready and the motivation and drive to make an impact on day one. The S+S team supports company partners and candidates throughout the hiring process by making thoughtful connections, matching candidate interests and abilities with relevant internship opportunities at local companies.
Oh, and did we mention that half of the intern’s $6,000 stipend is partially- subsidized by the 80|20 Foundation? You are only responsible for half of each intern’s stipend.
The Learning Company
The Learning Company was later dissolved about a year after my S+S internship, but the connections I made within Geekdom were so valuable later on in my career. I really really appreciated the collaborative nature of Geekdom and the ability for us to connect not only with our own startup but all the other startups too! When I graduated in 2020, all of my potential job offers or opportunities were canceled because of the pandemic. So I was really struggling to find a job, and the first job that I found was with a startup in San Antonio. I was linked to this job through a connection I made 2 years prior at Students+Startups. He remembered me even though I was his intern, and looked for a job for me during this really difficult time, and eventually found one! I was so grateful for this kind of connection.

S+S gave me the opportunity to network not only with my company partner but with other students around the nation. I loved having a geekdom membership as I was able to network and learn from the startups. S+S gave me the opportunity to grow professionally, personally and brought me out of my comfort zone. I was able to gain lifelong friends and meaningful connections with mentors. Hands down best summer ever!
My internship at the Heron was an incredible experience. I expected to learn some new skills, but was nervous as to how the summer would go. At every step of the internship, Ben gave me challenging, exciting assignments and projects that helped me learn and refine my own skills. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, Ben was quick to encourage me and validate that reporting is hard work, but his reassurance and help every time I hit a barrier gave me the confidence I needed. I am so glad that I had this experience of working with a team that loves what they do, and is dedicated to their mission. I learned so much over the course of this summer!
The Students+Startups internship gave me a sneak peak of the growing tech scene taking place on Houston St. My supervisor introduced me to one of the employees of Scaleworks, a venture equity firm that has acquired 7 B2B SaaS companies. And so here I am, 3 months into my first job out of college as a Business Analyst for Scaleworks, Inc, sitting in the heart of the Houston St. tech revolution and I love every moment of it
White Cloud Drones
This being my second year in the program has helped me reach new heights in my career and even given me a part-time job with my company partner.
My time with FlashScan3D built confidence in my skill sets of design, engineering, project management, etc. I look back fondly on my time there and with the S+S crew. I would not have the current job I have, not the startup intuition that I use in my own venture today were it not for S+S. Was a great experience – I learned a lot, met and worked with some very smart people. Received a significant amount of hands-on experience in the role under Chris Burney and was able to learn quite a bit about Angel Investing, due-diligence, and the San Antonio startup community at large.
The most important factors I’ve come to look for in a junior employee are resourcefulness, drive, and grit. (I want real work done, I want to learn something new, and I want her/his energy to be infectious to our team.) The Students+Startups program seems aligned to this ideal perfectly and I would recommend participation to any San Antonio startup – Not only to better their organization but also to play a small part in making our city a better place to work and live as more graduates choose to join our cause.
Co-founder & CTO
Even though Miltribe isn’t around anymore, I still stay in touch with my boss Donovan! I oftentimes credit my Deloitte internship with being instrumental in setting off my career, but in reality I wouldn’t have gotten that position without S+S. I also won the Valero Alamo Bowl scholarship twice as a direct result of interning in SA, so it helped with supporting my education. I am incredibly grateful for my Students + Startups experience, and think of it fondly every time I’m at Double Standard.
The other students really made this program amazing. Everyone was inclusive and social. I always felt welcome, eager to explore San Antonio and excited to develop connections with them.
Who are we looking for?
- Organizations with strong leadership, a positive and inclusive culture, and dynamic roles with a clear trajectory for growth.
- Must be located/headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
- Diverse industries including tech, retail, food/beverage, robotics, SaaS, biomedicine, sustainability, non-profit and more.
What makes a good experience?
- A compelling job description suited for an intern. Determine what your prospective intern should be interested in and what they should excel at. What skill sets are needed, what are their responsibilities, the impact their role will play, and some activities that are expected.
- Develop a thoughtful on-boarding process, including an orientation session where you set goals and expectations. Include a 3-5 minute overview of different parts of the company, with a representative from each department.
- Provide a healthy culture and immerse them into the camaraderie of what it takes to work productively and comfortably in an office or at a worksite.
- Have weekly 1×1 meetings with your intern to discuss progress on projects they’ve been working on, areas of the business that are interesting to them, personal aspirations for growth, and recapping previous goals.
- Post-internship performance review.
All interns must live in San Antonio during the entire program. If you are remote or hybrid, we ask that you keep an open line of communication with daily check-ins.
You’re not committed to the program until you find the perfect candidate, and our team will work extremely hard to find you a great intern.
Ideally, juniors to master students. We accept applications from freshman students, but companies have preferred students to be more along in their studies (around their second and third year).
Yes, if your budget allows, and if you have a role for each individual intern.
It does depend on the company and its hiring needs, but we want to ensure that every intern has a high-impact experience.
It’s an annual event that we host, bringing all of the vetted candidates and company partners together for “speed interviews.” You interview with ~8 candidates, 10-minute interviews each. There’s networking before, there’s networking after, and we encourage interns to utilize this time to walk up to you if they wanted more time or didn’t get the chance to interview with you. It’s a mandatory event for our intern candidates and company partners. Our out-of-SA students will do their interviews via phone call.
As we’ve grown, companies are bringing out everything they’ve got to set themselves a part from other company partners. This means pull-up banners, tablecloths, candy, t-shirts, swag, etc. Use your imagination, and bring your A-game. You are selling your company to them just as much as they are selling themselves to you all.
